Quality challenges and nature-based solutions for the use and reuse of water resources of the Besòs: maximizing sustainability
The objective is to transform water resource management in Mediterranean basins under water stress.
Center: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
RECLAM aims to transform water management in Mediterranean river basins to address water scarcity and the effects of climate change. The methodology involves water regeneration through Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR), integrating treated wastewater into aquifers to improve the resilience of the water system. Field experiments will be conducted at various spatial and temporal scales to support the development of an integrated management model. Predictive modeling tools will also be developed to manage water quality and quantity under extreme conditions. Expected outcomes include the optimization of water resources, the improvement of the status of water bodies in the Besòs river basin, and the use of regenerated water in compliance with regulatory standards. This solution is transferable to other arid and semi-arid regions. The transformation in management aims to improve the poor status of the water bodies in the Besòs basin and ensure compliance with the Water Framework Directive.
